Joy in the Journey

by Christy Johnson, Director of Communications

Recently, I was asked to write a short letter of encouragement and wisdom to a new mom. At first, I felt very insecure about it. I don’t feel like I am anyone to be giving advice. I still feel like most days I am winging this motherhood thing by the skin of my teeth.

However, I realized that maybe that was the advice I could offer her. Mothering is not easy. At times it is the hardest, most painful thing a woman will ever do. But, there are also moments of pure bliss and those moments make the hard and messy moments worth it all.

My advice to her was to find joy in the journey. I want her to remember it is a journey, a journey full of unknowns, uncertainties and a thousand different ways to go. I invited her to give herself lots of kindness when she messes up and to keep in mind that no matter how it looks, all the other moms are feeling the same way. God is working it all out for good and somehow despite all the mess ups, the times she loses her temper, and the times she falls flat on her face, the journey will be one she will look back on and realize was beautiful.

After I finished writing these words to her, I realized that maybe I really wrote them for myself. I am in constant need to be reminded of these truths. Maybe they can serve as a reminder to all of us women on this journey called motherhood.
