Third Grade
Language Arts
Third graders read one story a week with phonics, grammar, and literacy skills developed within each study. Readings include a variety of classic and contemporary works, including realistic fiction, folktales, informational nonfiction, biography and autobiography, plays, and poems. Students are encouraged to use a Biblical frame of reference when studying characters and their traits. Third graders work on oral language development, word identification skills, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing through our literacy program. Students present a biography book report during the year and participate in various novel units. To develop writing skills, students write daily in a journal. Cursive writing is taught throughout the year. Grammar skills are practiced every morning with a Daily Oral Language review. Workbooks are utilized to practice grammar usage and spelling tests are given weekly.
