Junior Kindergarten

  • Junior Kindergarten students are four or five years of age. We offer a 1/2 day three-day program (T/W/TH from 8:00-11:30 a.m.), a full three-day program (T/W/TH from 8:00 a.m.-2:45 p.m.) and a full five-day program (M-F from 8:00 a.m.-2:45 p.m.). Our teachers are licensed professional educators.

  • A Biblical Worldview permeates the Junior Kindergarten curriculum throughout the day. Each student is a child of God, who learns that all truth is God's truth! In our whole school daily Chapel, the children become eager volunteers as they lead songs for worship and pray for others. During the school day, students are encouraged to live out God's words from the Bible in the opportunities that develop through classroom interactions with others.

  • The Junior Kindergarten program earned dual accreditation by the Southern Association of Independent Schools and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It is also licensed by the Tennessee Department of Education

  • Junior Kindergarten implements a developmentally appropriate and research supported curriculum! The Open the World of Learning (OWL) curriculum promotes interactive learning through the use of child-initiated centers. Word play, early writing, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, and alphabet knowledge are developed through the use of music, movement, center-based activities, large and small group instruction, and one-on-one conversations.

  • Each week all students participate in literacy large group experiences, 45-minute learning centers sessions, and small group experiences in Everyday Mathematics, Literacy Work Stations, and Handwriting Without Tears. Students also explore science and classroom technology!

  • In addition, the five-day students enjoy Enrichment Classes in Bible, Music, Art, Computer, Library, and Physical Education

  • The Junior Kindergarten curriculum standards were developed to support the national standards used by The Covenant School teachers in Grades K-6.

  • The Junior Kindergarten year-long theme is Our Community. The students take field trips to sites such as Ellington Agricultural Center, Traveler's Rest, Owl's Hill Nature Center, and Nashville Children's Theater. All students attend community filed trips that are planned to support the learning objectives. The students enjoy developing a special relationship with an upper-school Buddy and all our friends in The Covenant School community

  • Parents of Junior Kindergarten students receive two narrative reports annually that are developed by the teachers to describe each student's developmental, academic, emotional, physical, and spiritual growth.
