Kindergarten

Kindness... One key aspect of our Christian faith is the way we treat others. Students begin the year "Making Friends God's Way." Biblical truths are lived out in the classroom as we work, play, and pray together. God's creation is a focal point of the kindergarten curriculum and students create a Bible notebook of verses from A - Z.

Integration...  Our innovative science and social studies units are integrated into the days' activities from read-aloud to songs to center activities. Students learn best when they see the big picture. We also believe that digging deeper is better. For example, during our study of insects we focus primarily on bees rather than learning a few facts about different bugs. Students actively pollinate flowers with cotton balls and sip nectar through straws. Visiting Owls Hill Nature Center and watching an actual hive of buzzing bees teaches us even more!

N    Nurturing... Encouraging discovery, creativity and self-expression in each child is very important. We want our students to be problem-solvers and independent thinkers. Our focus on higher level thinking skills challenges everyone!

D    Dynamic...  Our action-packed day is planned especially to meet the needs of 5 and 6-year olds. Our morning activities and Work Stations direct learners to achieve specific goals in phonics, reading, writing, and math. Reading instruction is individualized through leveled texts. In afternoon "Fun Center" time students make choices and set their own pace. Kindergarten is fun, exciting and busy. Ask any of our students -- they love school!

E    Enthusiasm... Our year is filled with special days and events: "Dress Like Johnny Appleseed Day", Three Pig House Day (the wolf, a powerful blow dryer, tries to blow each students house down), Owling on the grounds, Gingerbread House Day (students build their own delectable creations), Hibernation Day (do we sleep all day?), The Jack and the Beanstalk Project, Worm Day and others. Field trips to Morning Glory Orchard, Gentry's Farm, Nashville Children's Theatre, Owls Hill Nature Center, and a hands-on Native American presentation from the Global Education Center enhance our studies as well.

R    Wrap It Up...  Kindergarten is all about making wonderful memories, and in May, each student creates a special Memory Book filled with photos, writing, and art projects. These books are treasured by the students! Parents years later tell us that students still look at their Kindergarten Memory Books.
