Kindergarten
The Covenant School Kindergarteners begin their journey of life long learning and develop an understanding of a Christian worldview as they live, work and play each day. Our classrooms are designed to provide academic excellence in a nurturing evironment. Children have a different workstation each morning, but afternoons are designed for self-selection, exploration and social interaction with peers.
The Kindergarteners develop literacy skills with a blend of both phonics and reading simple texts. The teachers make instructional decisions based on continual observations of what the child can or cannot do to construct meaning from the text. Kindergarten children learn to write independently as teachers provide models of the use of print through interactive charts, graphs, and stories. Additionally, students are given many opportunities to write their own stories, classroom books, research documentation and scientific logs, and journals. The writing process is viewed as a natural way to communicate creatively and to share the new information students are discovering about their world.
Math concepts relate to the real world and are taught through problem solving, collecting data, and exploration with manipulatives. Students begin to view mathematics as a way of communicating ideas and linking concrete experiences to the use of mathematical symbols.
Art, Bible, Computer, Drama, Library, Music, Physical Education, and Spanish are enrichments included in the weekly kindergarten schedule. Field trips, guest speakers, and performances enhance our Social Studies and Science curriculum and extend student learning throughout the year. Favorite kindergarten trips include: Morning Glory Orchard, Gentry Farms, Owl’s Hill Nature Center and Nashville Academy Theatre. Student performances in November for Thanksgiving and in April for Grandparent’s Day are always exciting events. And finally, Field Day is a great way to end the year.
