4th Grade
Math
We have adopted a new, exciting curriculum this year- Everyday Math! No more math anxiety! We are learning that math is everywhere! We incorporate it in our language arts, social studies, and science. This allows us to learn concepts that used to be introduced in high school! We reinforce our learning with daily practice and fun educational games! We can even practice at home on the computer and Ms. Packard can check our work! We will explore geometry, numbers and organizing data, multiplication and division, decimals, fractions, percents, weight, volume, perimeter, area, and even logic!
Language Arts
Our reading curriculum combines classic children’s literature and Harcourt’s Comprehensive Reading and Language Arts program. We spend time on daily sustained silent reading, a focus on comprehension, an appreciation for the written word, creative book reports, and a view of ourselves as experienced readers and writers.
Language arts also includes a vocabulary study using Wordly Wise, spelling instruction, journaling, grammar study, and creative writing.
Social Studies
We will cover early American History from the first Americans through the Civil War. We will also be doing a lengthy study of Tennessee. We will focus on geography, history, and heroes.
Science
Our study will include a science fair in the fall and the spring. Our units will cover Natural Disasters, Simple Machines, Matter and Energy, Cells and the Human Body, Biomes, and our responsibility to care for God’s creation.
Field Trips
Our field trips will include the Frist Center, the state capital in downtown Nashville, a walking tour of Franklin, Christmas at the Hermitage, The Country Music Hall of Fame for a song writing workshop, Children’s Theater, and several other on campus activities. We will also be taking several virtual field trips on the internet.
Technology
We have 2 student computers in the classroom, a lap top for the teacher, plus a 30” screen to show power point presentations, movies, and video conferencing. We also have a computer lab that we visit once a week.
