Fourth Grade
Math
Fourth graders utilize the Everyday Math curriculum, which incorporates mathematics into language arts, social studies and science studies. Lessons are reinforced with daily practice and fun computer games, which can also be accessed online at home. Math units explore geometry, numbers and organizing data, multiplication and division, decimals, fractions, percents, weight, volume, perimeter, area, and logic.
Language Arts
The reading curriculum combines classic children's literature and Harcourt's Comprehensive Reading and Language Arts program. Fourth graders spend time on daily sustained silent reading with focus on comprehension and appreciation for the written word. Students practice their writing skills through book reports and journaling assignments. Language arts also includes vocabulary study using Wordly Wise, spelling instruction, grammar study, and creative writing.
Social Studies
Fourth graders study early American History from the first Americans through the Civil War. An indepth study of Tennessee history, focusing on the state's geography and famous citizens culminates in a Living History museum. Students select their favorite Tennessee hero, prepare an oral presentation and dress in costume for the event. In addtion, students take part in educational field trips to tour the Tennessee state capital and the Hermitage.
Science
Science units cover natural disasters, simple machines, matter and energy, cells and the human body, and our responsibility to care for God's creation. Fourth graders participate in the Invention Convention.
