First Grade
Reading
Students are taught reading through a philosophy of balanced literacy. Literacy experiences include whole-group shared reading using basal readers and small group guided reading using leveled readers. Phonics also plays a central role in the reading experience. Students are taught the phonics rules and then practice these rules by blending sounds together to form words. The first grade teachers thoroughly enjoy reading novels aloud to their classes. Quality literature is a wonderful springboard for discussion of new vocabulary words, story elements, and writing activities to extend what has been learned. Teacher-read novels also provide special bonding for the class as they listen and experience the adventure of each story together.
Math
In first grade, mathematics is taught with a problem solving
approach with emphasis on the development and understanding of mathematical concepts. The primary focus of the first grade curriculum is numbers and operations including addition, subtraction and place value. Instructional time is also devoted to measurement, geometry, data collection and analysis and patterns, which is the foundation for algebraic thinking. The curriculum is also taught in a spiraling format meaning that all concepts taught are reviewed and expanded upon throughout the year.
Science
One of our main concentrations in science is discovering matter. Students utilize the science lab by using microscopes to see and learn how all things are made of smaller parts. We also have an in-depth study of liquids, solids and gases. Weather and seasons are recurring themes
throughout the year. We establish many routines that are directly related to our math and science studies. It is so encouraging and exciting to watch the first graders fall in love with learning and constantly discover the wonderful world God has created for us to explore and know.
Social Studies
One of the main themes of first grade social studies is examining how things change over time. Our classes also explore and learn about concepts such as family and community, which leads to a brief study of Tennessee and culminates in the State Project, which is now a special first grade tradition. Students also learn some general American history and take a "Trip Around the World" from our classrooms!
